Stock Market Game – Yalicoo

Updates from the games

July 14, 2008

The July monthly competition is close to its midpoint and MSpurrier (13.25%) is increasing the gap with a few impressive sales last week. His most successful trades include the ocean transportation services company DryShips Inc. (DRYS), the alternative energy company Energy Conversion Devices, Inc. (ENER) and the solar cells manufacturer Solar Holdings Co., Ltd. (JASO). The profit from these stocks not only place MSpurrier in first place on the score board, but also award him the honorable Star of the Week title – which we grant to the week’s best player.
MSpurrier is not alone in the lead; BEars (10.93%) is only a few percents behind with a very positive current portfolio, mainly composed of alternative energy stocks that recently soared.

The returns in the quarterly competition are still lower, but we are beginning to see the differences between the players. The well-known victheslick (8.12%), who already won a number of Yalicoo competitions, is currently leading. His best holdings include YAHOO! (YHOO), which recently started to increase its price after losing about 30% of its value. Sixpence (6.02%) and SANMAN (5.31%) are just behind. SANMAN’s portfolio is composed of energy companies, while sixpence holds only one stock – the commodity risk management company FCStone Group, Inc. (FCSX). FCStone Group is currently being traded at around $15, more than 60% lower than its price a month ago, after posting lower than expected earnings due to higher costs and expenses and substantial write offs. However, sixpence is probably concentrating on the half-full glass - the considerable increase in revenues in the last quarter, and a forecasted rebound of the stock price. It is hard to say what (and when) will happen, but it will be very interesting to follow.
